The U.S. National Junior Team started off the 2022 World Junior Championship in the win column amid a somewhat uneven opening-game effort against Slovakia. The Americans took three points from the game with a 3-2 win, thwarting a late comeback by the Slovaks.

It wasn’t always particularly pretty, but the Americans found a way to win, largely thanks to its power play and an absolutely dominant second period where they out-shot their opponents 23-2. Slovakia goalie Simon Latkoczy, who plays for the USHL’s Madison Capitals, was outstanding in the game, making 39 saves and even drawing praise from USA coach Nate Leaman.
