Talking Hockey Sense Episode 32: Previewing the World Junior Championship with Corey Pronman

Things are pretty crazy right now, but with all teams arrived in Edmonton and testing daily, the World Juniors is going to happen still. It will be with fewer fans and there’s definitely going to be less on-site media and everything else, but the tournament itself will be largely the same.

I don’t often email out the podcast to the whole list, but I did want to share this particular episode as it is a 97-minute preview of the tournament featuring one of my most popular podcast guests and good friend Corey Pronman of The Athletic. I figured if you’re a fan of this website, you’re definitely a fan of the World Juniors and there’s a ton of information in there for you to get ready for the tournament before Boxing Day.

In addition to my conversation with Corey, I answer listener questions and provide a team-by-team preview with things to know about each of the 10 teams participating in the tournament.

Corey and I cover things like how to use the WJC as an evaluation tool and we spent a lot of time talking about draft eligibles like Shane Wright, Logan Cooley, Joakim Kemell, Brad Lambert, Simon Nemec, Juraj Slafkovsky, David Jiricek, Filip Mesar, Danila Yurov and more. And of course we had to spend a good chunk of time on Matvei Michkov and Connor Bedard. There’s a lot of info packed into this podcast, so I hope you’ll check it out as every team.

I also hope that you’ll consider following along my coverage of the tournament right here on Hockey Sense, as well as on Daily Faceoff. My plan right now is to have in-depth game-by-game breakdowns of Team USA on Hockey Sense, complete with player evals, and there will also be more general coverage and more general notable prospect evals available on DFO as well. So there will be many ways to follow the coverage.

Please consider subscribing to the Substack for complete coverage. A one-month subscription will get you complete WJC coverage, so you can get a ton of content for just $6. You can cancel at any time and still be covered for the next several weeks of WJC coverage, plus the tournament briefing and a look at USA’s Olympic roster without NHLers which is expected to be announced in mid-January.
