The 2022 Winter Olympics are over for the North American teams and there’s a lot to get to. I shared a whole bunch of thoughts on the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments to run down what we’ve learned and what may happen next. There was plenty to talk about and plenty to break down, so that’s what I kicked the podcast off this week. I also get into the rescheduled World Juniors and Women’s World Under-18 Championships, some current events including the looming NHL trade deadline and some random stories along the way.

I also wanted to try something a little different with the podcast by welcoming on one of the people I talk hockey with on a near daily basis. You may not know the name Matt Moran, but he’s been involved in hockey in various capacities over the last decade. From scouting for OHL and USHL teams, to working in OHL Central Scouting and having a lot of thoughts on the game as a whole, Moran offers his perspectives on player evaluation, the role of junior scouts, some stories about trials and tribulations including the one time a team he worked for invited the wrong player by the same name as the one they’d be tracking to an evaluation camp. There’s a lot to dive into.

Moran has scouted for the Chicago Steel, Tri-City Storm and Muskegon Lumberjacks, and also worked for the Windsor Spitfires during their Memorial Cup season in 2017 and the Soo Greyhounds. Those experiences offer him a unique perspective and a lot of connections in the game and he shares those thoughts candidly with me.
