Talking Hockey Sense Episode 7: Filmmaker Tommy Haines; Listener Q&A

Chris covers the Draft, college hockey, U18 Worlds and more in his listener Q&A

This week’s episode of Talking Hockey Sense is a little different. I am so excited to be joined by filmmaker Tommy Haines of Northland Films, who talks about the art of documentary filmmaking and his latest hockey-related project.

Tommy was raised in northern Minnesota and has blended his passions of hockey and filmmaking by directing and producing the cult classic Pond Hockey (2008) and the important Forgotten Miracle (2010) about the 1960 U.S. Olympic team that secured the first hockey gold medal for USA Hockey. His latest project is called Hockeyland, which will come out this summer.

The film follows the 2019-20 seasons of the boys’ hockey teams from Hermantown High School and Eveleth-Gilbert as the film crew embedded with these teams on divergent paths in their histories. It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and knowing how the story ended for at least one of those teams makes me excited to see what the film does with the source material. This short video will give you a glimpse of what to expect.

To learn more about the film, be sure to visit hockeylandmovie.com. And do check out the previous documentaries as both are must-watch movies for hockey fans of any kind.

Also in today’s pod, I finally get to my first Q&A and answer a bunch of questions from Talking Hockey Sense listeners about the draft, prospects, the season, and even some off the beaten path. I’ll do this more often if you guys like it, too. Make sure to let me know what you think.

I also briefly touch on some news and notes from around the Men’s World Under-18 Championship, some news on the U.S. Women’s National Team and a bit more.
