On this week’s episode of Talking Hockey Sense, I’m joined by Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald. Brad is an award-winning journalist who brings NHL-quality coverage to college hockey, first as the beat writer covering the University of North Dakota’s hockey team but also as a reporter with his finger on the pulse of college hockey throughout the country.
Brad was in the building for the five-overtime epic between North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth. He talked about what it was like to cover this historic game and all of the crazy little things that happened along the way. We also chat about several of UND’s current players that could be making an NHL impact sooner than later, with Brad making an awfully big statement about Senators prospect and freshman Jake Sanderson that you won’t want to miss.
We also talked about the Men’s Frozen Four field: St. Cloud State, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State and UMass, with a special focus on the incredible rise and consistency of UMD and the program Scott Sandelin has built for unprecedented success in the modern era of college hockey.
With 17 years on the beat at North Dakota, Brad has seen the last big steps of some big-time NHL players before they hit it big. He’s covered Zach Parise, Jonathan Toews, T.J. Oshie, Brock Boeser, and a host of other NCAA stars that reached the top level. We also talk about Schlossman’s chronicling the careers of the Lamoureux twins, Monique and Jocelyne, who Brad first became aware of for reasons not connected to hockey, oddly enough.
Also, stick around after the interview as I have some commentary on recent college hockey signings in the NHL, a look ahead to USA Hockey’s forthcoming announcement of its men’s Olympic management team and some notes on Team USA at the upcoming Women’s World Championship in the wake of the roster announcement.
